3 Of The Most Common Summer Plumbing Issues & How To Avoid Them

Posted in: Plumbing Repair

When most homeowners start thinking about things that could go wrong around their house during the summer months, plumbing issues aren’t usually the first thing that springs to mind, but you might be surprised to find out just how common some plumbing issues can be during this time of year. As a responsible homeowner, we understand that you want to do everything in your power to keep your home in the best shape possible, and keeping your home free of any major plumbing repairs this summer will be a big step in that direction. In an effort to help you keep your home protected from any major plumbing issues this summer, our team of professionals have taken the time to put together this short list detailing exactly what some of these issues are, and how you can prevent them from occurring in your home this summer.

Clogged Disposals

If you are one of the many homeowners out there who enjoys cooking out during the summer, it is important to ensure that you aren’t putting the wrong things down your disposal during the cleanup process. While it can be tempting to think that your disposal can handle just about anything organic that you put down there, there are a number of highly fibrous cookout staples that can easily cause damages to your disposal or result in major clogs, like corn husks, fruit rinds, and the like. Leftover meats, fats, and cooling oils are also something that you are better off just throwing in the trash can, as when poured down your disposal, they can congeal and lead to serious blockages. Additionally, make sure that when grinding anything up with your disposal, you continue to run the cold water through the drain for several seconds to clear away any remaining bits of food that might be leftover.

Sewer Line Backups

Depending on where your home is located, it could be more susceptible during the summer months to sewer line backups. Anytime you have excessive rain in an area, some of that water can find its way into your sewer lines through cracks or other breaches, and if too much of it gets into your sewer lines, you might find that you have water backing up into your toilets or your bathtubs. Tree roots can cause similar problems if they are able to force their way into your sewer lines while growing, but the issue is a bit more complicated to solve in that scenario. Regardless of what the cause might be, anytime you have sewage backing up into your home, it is important to call in a professional plumbing right away to get to the bottom of the issue and get it resolved.

Clogged Toilets

With the kids out of school and having friends over more often, your toilets are likely going to be seeing a bit more use throughout the course of the average day, and if everyone isn’t on the same page as to what is safe to flush, and what isn’t, you could easily find yourself with a serious toilet clog on your hands that store bought drain cleaner just can’t handle. To avoid this, make sure that your kids and any of their friends that might stop over are on the same page as to what belongs in the toilet, what doesn’t, and what constitutes the right amount of toilet paper to use before flushing.
